Gravity bridge chain is an open and decentralized bridge that unlocks interoperability and liquidity between blockchain ecosystems. Gravity bridge chain acts as neutral ethereum to cosmos bridge. Through Interblockchain communication (IBC), many cosmos projects can connect and use the bridge to access ERC20 assets, without having to operate the gravity orchestrator on their own chain.
Gravity bridge is aiming to be one of the most decentralized bridges in the Web 3 ecosystem at launch. The Gravity Bridge is a fundamental piece of infrastructure for an interconnected blockchain world.
“Open and interoperable systems are the basis of Web3 and open new markets and possibilities.” - Deborah Simpier
Gravity bridge is designed to move assets to and from EVM based chains and Cosmos SDK based chains. Simply put, the bridge can be used to bring Ethereum assets to the Cosmos ecosystem and Cosmos assets to Ethereum.
Below are a couple steps on how the bridge works:
“Fundamentally all cross chain bridges lock up assets on one side and mint a representation on the other. Users can then transfer and use that asset on the other side of the bridge with the confidence that it can be redeemed for the native asset on the native chain.” - Justin Kilpatrick
Check out more details on how Gravity Bridge works here.
Gravity bridge is secured directly by a group of over 100 validators. By design, the control of the assets in the bridge is as decentralized as the chain running the bridge. At launch, users will be able to permissionlessly bridge assets from Ethereum to Cosmos, opening up the world of IBC.
“Having an independent purpose-built bridge chain to interact with over IBC is preferable. An app specific chain, like Gravity Bridge, can focus on adding new EVM instances and iterating quickly. A large and diverse set of validators secure the chain and enable quick updates. We look forward to cooperating together with the Cosmos ecosystem as interchain staking progresses.” - Deborah Simpier
Gravity bridge will have validators and relayers.
“Our security goal is that the bridge be as secure as the chain. Just like in tendermint consensus 2/3 of the active validator set are required to move tokens on Ethereum. Furthermore validators are slashed if they make any Ethereum signatures not agreed upon via consensus.” - Justin Kilpatrick
Graviton (GRAV) will be the native token of the Gravity Bridge blockchain. GRAV will be used by the validators to secure the bridge, which contains the native assets being bridged on Ethereum.
Gravity Bridge will be starting out with the default Cosmos SDK inflation and allowing governance to decide future inflation changes. Along with this, Gravity Bridge will launch with the typical Cosmos ecosystem slashing parameters, at 5% for double signing and 0.01% for downtime.
At launch, GRAV will be supported by the Cosmopolitan wallet, and eventually supported by Keplr wallet as well.
Decisions will be made based on governance of the token holders. Gravity Bridge will be supported on the Commonwealth on the governance interface, so it will be a user-friendly space to propose and have discussions.
“If we define bridge users as Cosmos chains, then there is a neutrality necessary to interact with infrastructure. With a trustless bridge, there is an implicit alignment of incentives between the validators and the chains using it with IBC across the Cosmos ecosystem.” - Deborah Simpier
Most bridges in the space potentially pose a risk as whoever controls the bridge is in control of a large amount of the locked assets. Gravity Bridge aims to be a trustless, decentralized bridge where users can have peace of mind when bridging across Ethereum and Cosmos ecosystems.
“Gravity Bridge aspires to provide Ethereum access for the Cosmos ecosystem as a whole using IBC. This means the bridge must remain secure even with a very high TVL, a simple multisig or custodial bridge is too risky to build a dex and DeFi ecosystem on top of.” - Justin Kilpatrick
Currently, hundreds of homes and businesses are using the Althea internet service. On xDai, the Althea blockchain is required to scale reliability to tens of thousands of Althea customers.
Gravity is the missing piece that enables the Althea blockchain the ability to interact with Ethereum based stablecoins. This will let Althea migrate from more centralized side chains and into the decentralized capacity available to it through connection to Ethereum.
Gravity Bridge is currently live! In the immediate future, a number of governance decisions will update the final characteristics of the chain, including slashing conditions - as well a major update focusing on making transactions easily usable through exciting UX improvements.
Gravity Bridge is ready to fuel the next wave of DeFi and cross-chain transfers on Cosmos, steadily working to bring in assets from other ecosystems into the Cosmos ecosystem and wrapping out Cosmos-native assets into other chains.
Eventually - this will afford chains the chance to use assets between any and all ecosystems, allowing liquidity to flow freely from connected networks, into, and out of the Cosmos ecosystem.
